#ProtectingHourEarth : Nissan Sustainability Heroes

Nissan emphasizes the importance of driving a cleaner, safer, and more inclusive society by focusing on sustainability and sustainable practices. With sustainability at the forefront of Nissan's vision, the #ProtectingHourEarth campaign seeks to educate and celebrate the employees who play an integral role in making this vision come to life.

This week, we chat with Liz Gorbunova, Chief Marketing Manager at Nissan South Africa.

What does sustainability mean to you?

The importance of sustaining a safe environment for future generations cannot be overstated. As a mother, I am acutely aware of the dangers that our modern lifestyle poses to the future of my children, and this inspires me to advocate for sustainability and sustainable practices.

Sustainability as a concept can sound intimidating, how do you include sustainability in your everyday practices, even at the workplace?

I've discovered that it's the little things that add up to major wins. For example, at work, I made the conscious decision many years ago to disable the "automatic print" option in my desktop settings. This guaranteed that, out of all the documents queued up in my printer's folder, only the most essential documents were eventually printed. At home, we recycle by repurposing supermarket packaging, such as paper or plastic bags, garbage bags, which has resulted in a large financial savings over purchasing actual waste bags. Also, as a coffee connoisseur, I make sure to replenish my espresso recycling bags with every refill.

What is your advice to those who would like to take better care of the planet by involving themselves in sustainability initiatives?

My recommendation is to start small and search for everyday opportunities to facilitate change in your immediate surroundings; then, if you see an opportunity to get engaged in larger projects, go for it! The future of our planet is in our hands.
