The Nissan Navara is already an icon. In the world of the exceptionally durable yet achingly desirable 1-ton LCV which doubles as a leisure vehicle, the Navara is in a class of its own, and the model name has become synonymous with the best all-purpose LCV available in any market it enters.

Now Nissan has created the ultimate interpretation of this popular vehicle with the introduction of the Navara 3.0 V6 dCi. Packed with technology ordinarily found only in vehicles which fall into the SUV category, this new range-topping model also boasts the first V6 turbo diesel power plant available in the LCV segment in the form of the cutting-edge “V9X” engine beneath the reshaped hood, as well as the first 7-speed automatic transmission in the field.

While the tireless 4-cylinder, 2.5-litre dCi has become the most popular choice of engine for the Navara thanks to its combination of strength and fuel economy, the new 3-litre V6 enters the scene as the new market leader by a comfortable margin. Not only is this unit built using the latest diesel technologies coming from tireless research and development efforts on this ecologically-preferred engine choice, it showcases several  construction methods and combustion techniques being pioneered by Nissan in their quest for the most abundant power while consuming the least fuel.

“The new Navara V6 dCi is the most modern 1-ton LCV on the market today, while remaining a Navara at heart. This flagship Navara is the ideal platform to showcase the benefits of the latest innovations represented by our all-new V9X engine. Combining prodigious power with the great efficiency and the most refined delivery, it’s the smoothest, most polished 1-ton LCV in the world today,” comments Johan Kleynhans, Director of Sales, Marketing, and Aftersales at Nissan SA.

The new Navara V6 sets the standards for pure rugged charm from the outside. New body panels and detailing lifts the already recognisable aesthetics of the vehicle to new heights, while the subtle addition of a V6 emblem to the front doors distinguishes this new flagship model from its siblings.

Inside, the vehicle now boasts the acclaimed Nissan Premium Connect infotainment system. In addition to delivering crystal-clear audio reproduction from a widened selection of sources including iPods or other USB-connected playback devices thank to the superb quality of the Bose setup, Premium Connect displays satellite navigation information and the images from the rear-facing parking cameras in high resolution, while drivers enjoy these new benefits from the comfort of reshaped seats meticulously engineered to be more supporting of any body shape.

In short, the Navara 3.0 V6 dCi confidently breaks ground to deliver a 1-ton LCV which is effortlessly the most powerful, comfortable, and eye-catching vehicle in its class. Like the original Navara, which became the vanguard for a new breed of so-called “Leisure bakkies”, the V6 has cemented this position thanks to the application of the latest technologies while sticking to the core values of utmost strength, impeccable reliability and downright devilish desirability.

Peerless Performance

The new 3.0-litre V6 dCi engine now being introduced in the Navara offers significant power advantages over even the 2.5-litre dCi (which has already won customers the world over thanks to its ample output figures). In fact, developing 170 kW at 3750 rpm and a mammoth 550Nm at just 1750 rpm, the new V6 comprehensively out guns any competitive LCV diesel option.

This monumental twist allows the Navara V6 dCi to sprint from 0-100km/h in just 9.3 seconds, yet boasts an estimated CO2 output of just 250g/km and a combined-cycle average consumption of 9.5 litres/100km. This league of performance sees the Navara adopt a strong leadership position in this market segment, while the V6 configuration and raft of new construction techniques deliver a turbo diesel which is as superbly refined as it is punchy.

As well as the potent new engine, the Navara V6 channels its grunt to all four wheels through a new seven-speed automatic transmission. This marks the first time such an advanced gearbox has been made available in the 1-ton LCV range, bringing whole new levels of driving ease and everyday comfort to the scintillating Navara package while contributing to the superb levels of fuel economy achieved.

With a low idle speed of just 650rpm, the V9X engine boasts astoundingly low Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) properties, in part thanks to the use of Compacted Graphite Iron (CGI) for the engine block. This material is significantly lighter than traditional “grey steel” but much stiffer than aluminium, allowing for the block to be built without strengthening ribs or spars. The motor also produces 500Nm of its peak torque output at just 1500 rpm for unmatched throttle response in any gear.

This new breed of turbo diesel operates the latest Bosch fuel management systems coupled to high-pressure piezo injectors operating at 1800 psi. The compression ratio has been lowered to 16:1 to further improve NVH properties, and a unique 65-degree V angle adopted to allow for the efficient fitment of the large, single turbocharger between the banks of cylinders.

The depth of the cone-shaped valve pockets have been reduced and a mini-sac seven-hole injector nozzle adopted. The bowl diameter has been widened and the spray angle adapted accordingly for a better swirl effect at the same time as reducing thermal losses. Internal engine friction is reduced by the use of ultra-smooth components such as the micro-finished forged steel used for the crankshaft.

With performance meeting or exceeding the design goals, the final stage of engine development was to ensure the V6 met or exceeded emissions and fuel-efficiency targets. In addition to the advances made by the changes to the combustion chamber, the V9X engine incorporates innovative features designed both to enhance emissions performance and improve reliability.

Among these is an overcooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system which reduces NOx emissions. It incorporates an integrated exhaust gas by-pass in the EGR cooler which quickly helps to achieve the optimum temperature after start-up so that the full cooling capacity can be used. This features a low temperature water circuit for the EGR cooler to further reduce further the temperature of the exhaust gas and lower carbon monoxide and hydro carbon emissions.

Equally significant is the treatment of the tailpipe emissions. The system comprises a metallic oxidation catalytic converter offering lower pressure loss compared to a ceramic system.

All of this innovation has produced an engine which delivers the most refined package in the segment as well as leading power levels and fuel efficiency.

With all of this performance potential under the bonnet, attention was also given to upgraded suspension with new spring rates and shock absorber rebound calibrations. The added chassis balance and ride quality this lends to the package makes the new Navara 3.0 V6 dCi an unmatched pleasure to drive.

Crushing Capabilities

Underpinning this revolutionary engine is a platform which has proven itself time and again since the introduction of the Navara as recognisably robust and talented at whatever task the driver puts before it. Whether carrying its limit of cargo, towing trailers of twice its weight (up to 3000kg, braked), conquering the most intimidating off-road challenges or ferrying family members in style and comfort over smooth urban tarmac, the Navara 3.0 V6 dCi always feels in its element.

Transmitting all that torque to the road or to challenging adventure trails is an intelligent drive system which allows the driver to adapt the vehicle to the requirements of the surface. The Navara features a selectable 4WD drivetrain, with the driver choosing from a 2WD mode, a 4WD HI mode for slippery conditions or gravel surfaces, and the full 4WD LO Mode for traversing any demanding landscape.

Active Brake Limited Slip (ABLS) now debuts for the first time in a 1-ton double cab to add further technology and capability to the package. ABLS intervenes in 2WD and 4WD modes alike, applying the brakes in a controlled manner to any wheel which is detected to be losing traction, effectively forcing the drivetrain to apply power to the other driven wheels. In effect, this gives the Navara the equivalent of two limited-slip differentials when all four wheels are being driven, one at the front and one at the rear, for maximising the traction available in any conditions.

To keep drivers and occupants as safe as possible, in addition to a full raft of front, side and curtain airbags, the intelligent driving systems feature Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) anti-slip electronics as well. VDC employs seven sensors measuring the speed of the vehicle and comparing it to the speed at each wheel, yaw angle, steering position and brake pressure. The system is then able to respond to any oversteer or understeer situations by braking the correct wheels and reducing engine power to regain traction with minimal impact on the trajectory of the vehicle. For a rugged off-roader like the Navara, it’s also essential that the system can be disabled, as VDC is a road-based solution and doesn’t cope with challenging terrain.

As well as providing all the torque the driver could ask for off-road, the potent V6 turbo makes towing significant loads effortless. The Navara can pull a mighty 3000kg of braked trailer with ease, the smooth power delivery and automatic gearbox conspiring to almost entirely mask the weight being towed and ensure that the drive remains smooth and untroubled even under such demanding conditions.

Inviting interior

With the introduction of the pinnacle of engine technology nestled in the engine bay, the interior of the Navara 3.0 V6 dCi has also benefited from the latest developments, and has been upgraded to suit the even more refined nature of this range-topping model.

There’s a newly designed centre console adding a touch more flair to the already comfortable cabin, while audiophiles will appreciate the clarity and power of the Bose sound system installed as part of the Nissan Premium Connect package.. Nissan has also inserted cruise control, with satellite controls on the multifunction steering wheel for long-distance travelling, during which occupants will also appreciate the new shape of the seats, now delivering ideal ergonomics.

The instrument cluster looks and feels more upmarket than ever, and the old instrumentation has been replaced with a cleaner and more easily visible stack. Not only are the new instruments more legible in both day and night driving conditions, they further accentuate the sophisticated nature of this range-topping Navara.

Customers purchasing Navara V6 dCi models in SA also have the option of including full leather upholstery to replace the plusher standard fabric installed, as well as the new Nissan Premium Connect infotainment system, which has been designed to meet and exceed the needs of modern drivers. Nissan Premium Connect consists of a high-resolution touch screen, displaying Satelite Navigation and onboard computer information stored in the 40GB built-in hard drive – capable of storing over 9GB of your music in the car, as well as being endowed with Bluetooth audio steaming and USB / Aux input connections for a multitude of devices.. Add to that a reverse camera with predictive path guidance technology, and top it off with a DVD player and superior Bose sound system for good measure.

Finally, the interior has been subjected to detailed refinement similar to the meticulous engineering which has created the V9X power plant. Higher-quality materials have been used, along with revised dials and door trims, more upmarket switchgear, and the tasteful application of chrome and lighting highlights.

These changes to the interior perfectly highlight the even more upmarket ambience of this car as a whole, implying that you must be driving in a far more luxurious type of vehicle than the LCV moniker would lead you to believe. Smooth, refined travelling all -round is the forte of the Navara 3.0 V6 dCi, and that much is clear before you’ve even turned the key to experience the silky new engine.

Veritable Versatility

The Nissan Navara has, since its inception, been an exceptionally versatile offering. It combines the strength and reliability any fleet owner craves of his 1-ton LCVs, with substantial and innovative loading options thanks in part to the Utili-trak anchoring system, tractor-like towing power, and unmatched style and road presence.

While improving on these formidable qualities, Nissan has created a Navara which is even more refined than before, bringing more pleasure to the driver and his passengers. State-of-the-art electronic systems, combined with higher-quality materials and a more artful interior design than ever before, create a cabin ambience more reminiscent of an SUV than an LCV, while the modern turbo diesel engine coupled to 7-speed automatic transmission delivers a superbly quiet, smooth, and at all times untroubled ride.

As well as being generously bedecked and reflecting the high quality of Nissan workmanship in its tangible quality, the cabin includes thoughtful touches for the occupants to appreciate, such as side-pockets of the ideal dimensions for a 1-litre bottle.

Enticing Exterior

The new Navara 3.0 V6 dCi reflects these refinement enhancements, while retaining the distinctively purposeful and macho looks which have played a big part in the celebrated fame of the Navara in the LCV segment.

The Navara V6 gets an even more distinctive look with a new hood, bumper, and front grille treatment. These redesigned elements combine to give the Navara a sophisticated “face” highlighted by the substantial chrome detailing, which is as handsome as the vehicle is rugged. They also create a more aerodynamically efficient front end, which plays its part by impacting on the consumption and, therefore, reduced CO2 emissions.

“The new Navara 3.0 V6 dCi is an improvement over the previous-generation, flagship model in every way, from the subtle upgrades to its looks through to the major updates under the skin. This is far more than a facelift however, it’s a whole new direction, and the Navara has once more taken a pioneering role,” comments Ross Garvie, Nissan SA Product Manager.

Premium positioning

The Navara 3.0 V6 dCi is a new flagship which appeals to those who most appreciate the size and strength of the design as a whole, as well as the imperious all-round capabilities of the vehicle. It’s a 1-ton bakkie which appeals to the head and the heart, thanks to its unique combination of premium performance, hard-working capabilities and plush interior comfort.

The Navara 3.0 V6 dCi starts at R508 400, a price point which positions it firmly at the top of the double cab market. It fulfils the promise of this price point by delivering a vehicle which holds its own in any company, complete with high-tech interior fitments, tangible quality in every control surface, and a drivetrain which would not be out of place in far more costly SUVs and luxury sedans.

Navara V9X buyers will be customers looking for a vehicle as rightfully confident as they are themselves. They want, and will get, a vehicle with the underlying strength to match its overt impressions of power and poise, with a cabin which exudes a premium feel even against pricier competition.

In short, the Nissan Navara 3.0 V6 dCi will appeal most to those who, like it, have nothing left to prove and are looking for a vehicle which will be on top of its game, given any challenge!
