WINTERTON, South Africa – Although her late husband, Gugu Zulu, was a race driver, Letshego Zulu had never ridden in a race car before he passed away climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in 2016. However, when the opportunity arose to compete in the Gold 400 alongside experienced cross-country racer Terrence Marsh, she took it.
So huge was the thrill, that Zulu has decided to once again race alongside Marsh in the Berg 400 over the 17-18 May weekend. Zulu and Marsh will be racing one of the five Red-Lined Nissan Navaras entered in the event.
"I raced the Gold 400 with Terence last year," said Zulu. "That was such a thrill that I could not wait to get back in the hot seat — I'm an adventure junkie and fitness freak and I thought I had conquered the most exhilarating sporting challenges when I got the Cape Epic and Comrades under my belt, but racing far surpasses those! It's the ultimate adventure! Now I know why Gugu was so hooked on motorsports!"
Red-Lined Motoring Adventure is an official marketing partner with Nissan South Africa. The company focuses on building custom off-road race cars and trucks that are marketed and sold around the world. Zulu and Marsh will be racing in purpose-built T1 Dakar Navaras powered by a VK50 engine.
"I will be riding alongside Terence in the Red-Lined Racing celebrity car, so it's the real deal — I need to concentrate on the notes and navigate all the way while this Dakar bakkie devours rocks, ruts and mountains," said Zulu. "I absolutely loved every second last time and really could not believe how fast the Red-Lined Navara was. Now I just cannot wait to get back in there!"
Driver, arch-adventurer and team boss Terence Marsh will continue with his development of the Red-Lined Nissan Navara VK46, with Zulu reading the notes.
"We use our race development miles to double up as the ultimate celebrity adventure experience and Letshego really loved every second last time out," said Marsh. "Now here she is alongside me once again as we prepare this new machine for its debut at next year's Dakar. What better an adventure than that?"
