ROSSLYN, South Africa – Nissan Group of Africa welcomed Gauteng Premier David Makhura and a delegation of public officials to the company’s manufacturing plant in Rosslyn.

The purpose of the visit was to confirm that the plant has taken the necessary precautions to protect employees and their loved ones against the COVID-19 virus in advance of the plant’s reopening in June. In addition to Makhura, the delegation consisted of the MEC of Health Bandile Masuku, MEC for Gauteng Department of Economic Development, Agriculture and Environment - Morakane Mosupyoe.

Nissan South Africa is among the first car manufacturers that responded swiftly to President Cyril Ramaphosa's call to close all businesses to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the country. The company has ensured that they are in alignment on the national response to the coronavirus pandemic by resuming operation cautiously, taking care to reduce the risk of infection across the automotive value chain. Personal contact will be kept to a minimum, strict hygiene practices will be implemented and social distancing conditions will continue to be adhered to.

“We are extremely happy that we have passed all COVID-19 inspections and we look forward to welcoming our employees back to work in June after the temporary shutdown of our Rosslyn plant due to the pandemic,” said Mike Whitfield, Chairman Nissan Africa & Managing Director Nissan Egypt at Nissan Motor Corporation at Nissan Group of Africa. “The safety and health of all our stakeholders, including our employees is our biggest priority.”

Nissan has put in place procedures to ensure social distancing, a proper orientation for staff, access control, new setup of gathering areas including meeting rooms, the plant, and canteens to ensure the safety of the Nissan team as well as their family and loved ones.

“I am pleased with the procedures that Nissan Group of Africa has put in place to protect the people of Gauteng, which is my priority as we reopen the economy,” concluded Gauteng Premier David Makhura.
