Nissan Navara 4X4. Enough said.

Nissan's all-conquering Proudly South African Navara 4x4, which is currently leading the Absa South African off road championship, is now available in standard production form.

Nissan has added three 4x4 versions of its popular Nissan Navara double cab to the range of 4x2 pickups that were launched less than a year ago.  Now the bold and rugged good looks and the interior comfort and versatility that have established Nissan Navara as a top contender in the double cab market is complemented by additional off-road ability that offers class-leading power, torque and towing capability.

The new Nissan Navara 4x4 is available in the same six-speed manual and five-speed automatic petrol versions driving the 4x2 models and offers the only six-speed manual diesel version in its category.

The second generation high -output common rail turbo-diesel engine  delivers 128 kW of power and 403 Nm of torque.   This means that the Nissan Navara 4x4 diesel not only outperforms all of its rivals, but it can also carry up to 843 kg while towing up to 3 000 kg.

The 4.0 litre award-winning V6 petrol engine delivers class-leading performance (a prodigious 198 kW of power at 5 600 r/min and 385 Nm of torque at 4 000 r/min). The addition of the 4x4 Nissan Navara models brings absolute power to the double cab market and is sure to outperform any of its rivals without much effort.

Advanced design features include Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) for instant management of throttle input, with secondary mapping in  4WD Low; Continuous Valve Timing control (C-VTC) and the Nissan variable Induction Control System (NICS), which improve engine operating efficiency and driveability, particularly at low r/min, with optimum torque available throughout the rev range.

The Nissan Navara 4x4 is a serious off road contender.

A dashboard rotary switch provides easy access to three driving modes:  2WD for normal driving conditions sends power to the rear wheels only, while engaging 4WD locks the transmission.

4WD high gives the ratio required for faster, lighter off road conditions, while 4WD low selects a low ratio for maximum traction in serious off road conditions, deep mud or during climbing, with maximum engine braking while descending.

In addition, it offers all the benefits of four-wheel drive and is fitted with a manually operated electric rear differential lock, ensuring an equal split of power to both rear wheels under demanding off- road conditions.

As with the Navara 4x2, the 4x4 features both anti-lock braking (ABS) and Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD) as standard equipment.  In addition, Nissan Brake Assist senses when the driver is making an emergency stop and automatically increases braking effort, reducing the stopping distance.

You'd think you're in a luxury SUV – Nissan Navara proves it's possible to be tough without being rough, with an interior that's exceptionally spacious , comfortable and comprehensively equipped. It boasts the same high level of specification as the 4x2 and shares the styling, technology, safety and luxury. The Nissan Navara double cab is a full five seater with a wide, roomy cabin. The rear seats have a 60:40 split and fold to create maximum luggage space. There's lots of storage space, including a large double deck glovebox, a central dashboard box. Access to the rear seating and the cargo area is easy with the cab's large rear doors, and convenient steprails provide easy entry to and exit from the cabin and facilitate access to the roofrack. Further contributing to the confidence and control Nissan Navara offers the driver, the zone body construction of the cabin provides a strong, protective safety cell.  Driver and front passenger air bags offer additional impact protection.

Perhaps the most innovative feature of the Nissan Navara is the Utili-track load system and reinforced cargo bed construction. The biggest and widest in class cargo area has a large quick-release handle on the tailgate and features five channels (three in the bed and two on the sides) that will accept a variety of accessories, including racks, dividers and trays that enable any shape or size of load to be transported securely.  Fixed hooks and sliding cleats allow for cargo to be tied down with ropes or canvas adjustable straps.  

The European-built Nissan Navara, which complements the existing locally-manufactured Nissan Hardbody range, brings real passenger and SUV levels of refinement to the double cab pickup market, a market that Nissan has dominated in Europe and South Africa in recent years.  Cruise control is standard on all models, a first for a double cab range in South Africa.

"Nissan Navara has found a ready following in South Africa, who have taken to its big, bold and rugged styling, its exceptionally roomy and luxuriously appointed cab, and its  load area, which is the widest, tallest and biggest in its class," said senior marketing manager Pieter Maritz.

"It outperforms its competition in power, torque and towing capability, combined with its genuine off road capability and the new standards it sets in interior comfort and versatility, has helped it achieve a segment share of almost 14%.

"Nissan's share of the double cab market (Navara and Hardbody combined) is 28%, which makes us leaders in this market since the beginning of they year.  The addition of the 4x4 derivatives to the Nissan Navara range will enable us to strengthen our position even further," Maritz added.
